Friday 24 March – To Chiang Rai

Today has been a bit of a travelling day, heading off fairly promptly to the airport and catching an Air Asia flight which whisked us up to Chiang Rai. Here we were met by a lovely driver and went to the most heavenly cafe/restaurant called Chivit Thammada for lunch on the river. Alex and I started with the most beautiful and equally delicious drink called butterfly pea with lemon and honey – so good, followed by a fried rice and tempura prawns …. Yum!.

We continued to the house via a little market in the village selling endless fruit and vegetables I had never seen before and all goes into creating the exquisite taste of their food. Tippy insisted we bought everything to try! There were some slightly alarming looking pink eggs which I was able to persuade her to leave behind!

We continued on our way, suddenly leaving the tarmac road and heading up a steep, dirt track to the Phu Chi Sai resort where Tippy and Alex are building a house. It is not quite ready yet so a kind friend of theirs, Jason, was allowing us to stay in his beautiful house on the other side of the valley. We were greeted by two heavenly puppies, Daisy and Bobby, several cats and Naruesha, Jason’s charming partner. Although the resort is not far away, this house is totally on its own, in the middle of the forest and is completely stunning. The wonderful sound of crickets and frogs is deafening and although hazy, the view is magnificent. Naruesha cooked us a delicious Thai supper and we collapsed into very comfortable beds.
