Sunday 19 February – Blue Mountains

We woke to a rather misty morning so had quite a gentle start to the day in the hope that it might lift, but sadly no. So we headed to the well known Three Sisters which were unfortunately somewhat shrouded in mist and by this time also, Chinese tourists. We had a quick chat with the nice girl in the information centre (discovering that quite a number of the walks were closed – a little reminiscent of Gladstone) and withdrew to the coffee shop to make a few plans.

The Three Sisters – in the mist!

After the 64 flights of steps yesterday, I thought I would be in charge of the choice of walk today and we headed off, in theory, on a more gentle walk – not! Once again I guess the clue is somewhat in the name – Blue Mountains!- but it is oh so beautiful. We descended deep back into the canyon to see Leura’s Cascade and then went further to the falls, where we met a mass of young who told us about an infinity pool we had to go to -though there was quite a steep descent. Both Gibbsy and I suffer from such terrible FOMO (fear of missing out), we had to go. Indeed it was quite a deep descent – there did not seem to be many other 60 year olds! – but we made it, just!

The affinity pool!

We eventually returned to Bluebottle about three hours later, and realised of course that nowhere in Katoomba would still be serving lunch, however we suddenly spotted the most hysterical deli called Yellow Deli serving not only a lot of healthy green things, but also a delicious craison (cranberry raisin) salad so I was very happy. Again we felt we were on a 70s film set amidst some questionable folk music! Gibbsy had a very healthy green juice, and complimenting the sweet hostess, who owned the farm where the green was produced, was given the name of every market from here to Perth where he could buy this very special green juice.

A Crimson Rosella

Anyway, reenergised and full of green beans we headed off on another walk, this time we headed for Govetts Leap (which was closed!), so went on to the Horseshoe Falls and looked down over the amazing canopy of trees which from this height looked like giant curly cale! FOMO then set in again and we kept walking up and down from lookout to lookout until we eventually reached Popes Glen beyond which was fortunately closed so we finally had to return.

Few more steps!

By this time, it was all quite late and panic was setting in about supper as everywhere seems to stop serving at eight, so very red faced and sweaty we headed off to revisit the hot-waiter in Zoes. This time he made us a Southside cocktail (delicious: Gin, mint and lime) and yummy guacamole and a few more tortilla and tostadas; all washed down with a lovely local female act singing perhaps a little too much of her own work!
