Thursday 5 January – Uluru

Today we had a lie in – hooray! In fact we had a very leisurely day altogether, with the two things we had booked, being cancelled. There is clearly a bit of a staff shortage here. This has resulted in a slightly reduced menu of tours we can do and a few being cancelled. The weather has also been a little out of the ordinary. Apart from our first day, it has been nowhere near as hot as it should be, which is a huge blessing, but it is also windy and overcast so not great for the star-gazing 😔. The forecast for the weekend is heavy rain, which we had not anticipated, but is in fact rather exciting. Apparently after only a few hours of rain, waterfalls form at Uluru which would be amazing (and somewhat unusual) to see. For this reason we made a last minute change to our tours so we could return to Uluru in the rain on Saturday.

We received news that our rare emu egg was most likely to be a very common native melon – somewhat disappointing! However speaking of birds we were joined by some rather fine Galahs while we were having breakfast in town.

Galah’s
A particularly cheeky chappy – flavours of ‘Jacker’!

We had a delicious dinner at the Arnguli Grill, in the neighbouring hotel, apparently enlivened by local Indigenous flavours with native spices, grains and seeds!
