Sunday 13 November – to Costa Rica

Today has been another travelling day as we said a very sad farewell to beautiful Guatemala, Lottie and I have really loved it and still feel somewhat intoxicated by the wonderful experience we have had. I hope I will never forget the assault of all my senses visiting that wonderful market in Chichicastenango.

Lovely La Lancha
Funicular down to the lake

We had the morning to enjoy lovely La Lancha – with its almost non-existent Wi-Fi, thus the delay in posts! We were collected as scheduled promptly at 2pm by Milton and driven to Flores, which we reached in plenty of time and spent a happy two hours watching all the comings and going of this tiny (but international) airport. A short flight to Guatemala City where we had quite a steamy exchange at the Avianca desk as we had been unable to check in our luggage (as their site had failed) and they charged an extortionate fee to take it. Grrr! I then lost everything I had written on my blog for the last two days …… it was a low moment!! Plus a stinking cold. But the first I think, in two months so that is not a bad travel record.

Avianca flew us to San Jose, Cost Rica where we were met by very chatty Eduardo who drove us, without drawing breath, to Finca Rosa Blanca where Lottie and I were shown to a room with one bed. It was now midnight, so there was not much more of the day to go wrong. This is a hilarious hotel, a throw-back to the 60s with a lot of tiles! It is in a small coffee farm perched in the hills just above San Jose and luckily has rather lovely views.
